Winter, there's nothing like it! That frosty time of year which bestows upon us the wondrous gifts of earmuffs & mittens (a fashion MUST), shoveling snow in sub zero temperatures, and that one extra special gift of the winter dance- you know the one, its actually more of a "forced sprint" from the warmth of your bedsheets to the cold floor and then into the bathroom where your hot water takes a good ten minutes to come through the pipes...well, I'll stop there! Aside from the aforementioned negative aspects of winter, there exist those great things about this season which are more worthy of discussion. For example, Chocolate Cherry Nut Bread is an exceptionally great companion on a cold winter day!

The recipe for Chocolate Cherry Nut Bread comes from a close friend of mine, Bonnie Long, who specializes in baking the best desserts I've ever tasted in my life. This treasured family recipe of hers is delicious! I like that it is sweet without being overpoweringly so.  Treat yourself to a slice of Chocolate Cherry Nut Bread along with a steaming cup of hot cocoa, and then you'll understand why I call this dessert the perfect pick-me-up for a cold winter day!

You Will Need:
  • 2 Cups of coarsely chopped nuts
  • 1 Cup of dates or raisins
  • 1 Cup of halved marachino cherries
  • 8 Oz Sweet Milk Chocolate ( a bar broken into 1/4 inch chunks)
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 1/2 Cups Flour
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/4 Tsp Salt

Directions:

1.     Preheat oven to 325 Degrees Fahrenheit
2.    Grease loaf pan and line with wax paper
3.    Beat eggs.
4.    Add sugar to the eggs and beat again.
5.    In a separate bowl, sift flour, salt, and baking powder.
6.    Mix in nuts, raisins, cherries, and chocolate.
7.    Add the egg mixture and stir until well coated.
8.    Place in lined pan and bake for 1 hour and 25 minutes.
9.    After allowing the loaf to cool, enjoy a slice with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee!

Easy Purple Cole Slaw!

Wondering what sort of snacks you can dream up for game day? There are of course the old standbys of chips, dip, potato skins, and popcorn... but how about trying something new? Something like Easy Purple Cole Slaw!
This delicious snack is, as you may have guessed, quite easy to make!
Would you like to see just how much of a cinch it is to whip up a bowl of Easy Purple Cole Slaw? Well, this recipe, generously shared with Your Verve by Bonnie Long, is detailed below:

Easy Purple Cole Slaw
Ingredients:
6 Cups of finely chopped red cabbage (one small head)
4 Chopped Green Onions (Tops and stems)
Dressing:       2/3 Cup of lite mayonnaise
                      2 Tbsp vinegar
                      4 Tsp sugar
                      1 Tsp salt
                      1/4 Tsp Black Pepper
                      Whisk together mayo, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper until the sugar dissolves.

Directions for Cole Slaw:
In a large bowl, combine cabbage and green onions. Add dressing and stir until well coated. For best results, refrigerate for two hours before serving, as this allows flavors to blend.
